After reading a “members only” post written by Frank and Karen Baker concerning the purpose of advertising and whether self-promotion is to inflate an ego, I thought I might express my opinion on this topic.
Real estate agents are first and foremost marketing agents. We market property; we market ourselves; we market our marketplace; and we market our areas of focus. We market to make the phone ring.
If we stop marketing, we are out of business. If we feel insecure to “shout out” about our production, who will know what you've achieved? If we fail to market about our marketplace and the property to be found there, we will never move our inventory.
Marketing is the backbone of our business. We are marketing agents FIRST, not sales people. We must market properly and with many different approaches and in many sources, in order to maintain our business. Marketing online is not the only venue for marketing, but it’s a good starting point.
If we worry about how others feel about our self-promotion or our production charts, we will be missing a great opportunity to secure future business. Potential sellers want to hire productive real estate agents to market their homes. The production charts will allow those who search online for top real estate agents the opportunity to find you.
If you are not found somewhere, you’re out of business. If your inventory is not found, it won’t sell. Have you noticed how the negative response to self-promotion is always from other real estate agents? It’s easy to interpret that picture!! If you have it, flaunt it. If you don’t have it, work harder to obtain it. Don’t’ cast a shadow over others who have worked, accomplished and promote what they’ve achieved.
