I know it’s never a popular topic, for some reason, but I want to share my thoughts on how real estate agents can improve their knowledge of resale and new construction, especially new construction. The National Home Builders provide online courses that will assist you in your journey to the next level.
There are two separate courses. One is Certified New Home Specialist and the other is Residential Construction Certified. The latter is beneficial to agents who list and sell resale properties and well as new construction. This course will provide you with information about methods and materials, systems of the home and the proper terminology of residential construction.
We all sell resales and before it was a resale, it was a new home. How many of you would be able to successfully describe and understand the methods and materials that were involved in the construction of that resale property? I completed both courses many years ago and it was similar to a college level methods and material course that I had taken, without getting into the depth of a college level course.
How many of your buyers might have bought if you had been more knowledgeable about what you were showing? How many listings would you have closed, if you were more informed about the materials used during construction and could speak intelligently using the proper terminology. You’re not a builder or a home inspector, but you should be familiar with the product that you are showing and/or marketing. It just makes good sense!!!
