When I first began selling new homes, builders in my area were building capes and colonial style homes that were unfinished upstairs. Young couples who didn’t need a three bedroom home at the time would jump to buy one. We were preselling these homes. The first floor offered a kitchen; a full bathroom; a fireside living room; and two other rooms or one large from to back room to be used as bedrooms.
This market is one that can easily handle a new home that is unfinished upstairs. There was a door at the top of the stairs and on the other side of that door, one would find an open area with exteriors walls insulated; exterior walls wired; heating brought up and plumbing in the floor.
Bank owned lots are selling for a price that accommodates the unfinished cape or colonial. The upstairs can be finished in the future as the space is needed. This is a great way for a single or young couple to start homeownership. If you’re in an area with available lots, this is an option that many buyers would like available to them. It’s a viable option that should not be eliminated.
