We often hear agents referring to our industry as a “survival of the fittest” business. Thinking about that statement, I’m now questioning how loosely it's used. Look around your office. How many survivors are not what you’d call “fit” in the real estate business? They're in every office.
There are many who are hanging on and will continue to hang on, but they are not fit, and they probably should not be working in the real estate business at all. There are others who are more than surviving, and they probably would not be able to pass the licensing exam, if they had to be re-examined!!! There are also those agents who are incredibly intelligent and know the real estate business, but they are not doing well and teetering on falling.
I’ve said more than once that our business is based on who you know and not so much what you know. Of course, if you know the right people, and you know what you’re doing, you’re golden. You’re a thriving real estate agent, and nothing is strong enough to cause your demise.
We use the term “survival of the fittest” very loosely in our business because we are a commission based service. There are so many ways to make a buck in real estate, there’s really no reason for anyone to jump off this bandwagon.
