I read a post written by my good friend, Ginny Gorman titled “Are You the Engine or the Caboose?” and I thought I’d share my thoughts on this topic. Variety is the key word for types of personalities in the real estate business.
The “engines” of our business are those who feel confident enough to lead the way. They might be broker/owner/ managers or just self-starters who may be the leaders in a variety of niche areas. Confidence in their ability to perform is the key to their success.
There are many cars in between the engine and the caboose on every train. Jumping to the caboose is eliminating the major production within our industry. The engine, in my opinion, is comprised of the top 5% of our industry. These members are the select few who set the pace in an office or an area.
The passenger cars are as important to our industry if not more important than the Engines. Without the average agent, there would be no one to close the new prospects; there would be no transactions created; and there would be a void in our production that could never be filled. The active average agent is the backbone of our industry, just as the passenger cars deliver the people from point A to point B.
The caboose is the trailing end of the train. The view is backward. It never looks forward, and it’s always many cars behind. The caboose is the entity in real estate that’s not going to survive in the real estate business.
The caboose is “not” a good team member. It’s dead weight and every office has that entity. The train functions very well without it, just as an office functions best without it. The team that hires a caboose to function with the engines will realize that the caboose will hinder the forward motion of the other members. The successful team has no caboose. It has a group of engines that need to be “tuned up” and then they will run like well-oiled machines. They will eventually create their own trains!!
Every office strives to eliminate the caboose. It’s an ongoing process called recruiting. This is the train that I continually attempt to maintain in good working order. It’s a full time job and if done properly, it results in more than survival. It results in a group of thriving individuals in the real estate business.
