The Town of Franklin MA has a very large Italian population,
and where there are Italians, there is wonderful Italian food. One of the most popular Italian markets, and certainly my favorite, is Ferrara's Market in the downtown area of Franklin. Its original owner, Peter Ferrara opened his market in 1961, and his following climbed to astronomical levels.
Today, Ferrara's Market continues its journey, carrying on that fantastic reputation, and remains a Franklin favorite. In 2001, Bob Dorr, a highly skilled and very knowledgeable meat cutter, purchased Ferrrara's Market and expanded many of its offerings including catering, preparing a great variety of platters and holiday baskets of both food and fine Italian wine. Peter's grandson, Joe, is a familiar face helping to carry on his grandfather's name.
There are many homemade specialties offered at Ferrara's Market including chicken and beef bracioles, pasta fagioli, porketta, homemade Italian sausage, homemade spaghetti sauce made daily, stuffed veal roast, homemade pastas, tripe and a variety of calzones. Lunch time is a busy time for Bob Dorr with the preparation of a variety of hot and cold subs and wraps. The Porketta sub is spectacular, and you can't compete with his veal parmesan sub that is so tender and
cooked to perfection.
Some of the other favorites in this market are Italian candy and cookies, stuffed cherry peppers, snail salad, green and black olives and a variety of beer and wine. My family loves going to Ferrara's Market, and I could buy everything the store offers. Sometimes I do!! The best phrase to describe the quality of the products and the service provided by Ferrara's Market is "Molto Bene" and if you visit Bob Dorr, one day, you'll understand why he's a Franklin Favorite.
Ferrara's Market is located at 20 West Central St in Franklin and the phone number is 508-520-4621.
