There have been several posts that I've read recently giving opinions on how to survive in this unique real estate market. This market is like no other that I've ever experienced. One blog post suggested that agents who were having a difficult time making ends meet should consider taking another job and doing real estate on a part time basis. The thought of that made me ill. If you are attempting to survive in the real estate business by focusing on another profession, you need to rethink your options.
Part time real estate agents are nothing more than a law suit waiting to happen. This is a full time profession and unless one focuses fully on this business, the job will never run smoothly. When a seller lists with an agent, that seller expects to receive full service at any time during the work day from a full time agent. A buyer client expects to be working with a full time buyers' agent who is continually searching for the right property and is available at any time during the work day to present that newly listed property, in a timely fashion, to the client. Other agents who need information or may be attempting to communicate with the part time agent deserve better treatment than what that part time agent can provide.
There is no room for part time real estate agents in this profession, in my opinion. Real estate is a service industry. Whether the service is being provided to a seller, a buyer, another agent, a mortgage officer or an attorney, the lines of communication need to be available on a full time basis and at any time during the work day. The automobile industry can handle part time or full time sales, not the real estate industry. Find a good mentor and prepare a game plan for a full time career in real estate, or turn in that lockbox keypad and start up those engines.
