I Never Rant About Anything.....But This Is A Rant On Behalf Of Our Teachers

I taught biology, chemistry, geometry, drug education and general science for two years in the early ‘70's.  Times were certainly different then and so were the students and their families.  I can fully understand why there's a shortage of well qualified teachers.  There is no respect given to that job.  If I hear one more person blurt out that teachers make too much money and have too much time off, it's going to get ugly.

As family life begins to fail, so too does the education of the children of those families.  As attention and energy are taken away from the children and directed toward the break-up of the family structure, the children act out and their education suffers.  The problem then falls back on the teachers within the school system.  Whatever dysfunction occurs at home, the actions are displayed at school and the teachers are then saddled with the problem of children of families who now have education at the bottom of the list.

The teachers in Central Falls, R.I. are a prime example.  I don't know much about Central Falls other than to say it's a very, very financially depressed area.  Central Falls High School has a very high dropout rate.  On February 25, 2010, all of the teachers were fired by their board of trustees.  It's a failing school system.  Only 48% of the 2009 class graduated after 4 years of high school.  Only 7% of eleventh graders tested proficient in math and 55% in reading, according to the most recently reported test results.

The school board stated that by firing the entire teaching staff and then hiring back no more than 50% of them, the school system will then receive funds to improve the quality of education in their system.  This is a program designed by the Obama Administration.

I ask you.....who do they think they are going to hire in place of those they fired???  The students are troubled.  The families are dysfunctional.  The teachers who have been working with these students deserve to be placed on pedestals, not fired.  They are devoted to their jobs, and they have a passion for educating troubled children.  They are dedicated teachers, for certain. Who else would even consider working in that environment? Teaching is a thankless job for many.  The more troubled and depressed the school district, the more thankless the job.  Can you understand why there are so many teachers leaving that profession and going into real estate?  I am one of them, and there will be more.
