Rapport....Not Always Easy To Establish

When one thinks of a salesperson, the first thought might be to picture someone with the "gift of gab" or a "fast talker."  On the contrary, establishing rapport is one of the most important tasks to accomplish in a sales situation.  It is a very important skill to a salesman.  The ability to create rapport is a skill that needs to be developed.  Some do it better than others, and there are those who just don't have a clue.

One easy way to establish rapport with someone is to find a common ground.  This can easily be done in a number of ways, but one needs to be cautious that rapport doesn't become a conflict.  As an example, a customer might share that one of his grandchildren enjoys swimming.  A response may be that you also have a grandchild who is a swimmer.  Creating a conflict would be for you to expound and say that yours swims competitively and is working toward joining the next Olympic Team.  Now you've destroyed any hope of rapport, and you've converted common ground into a competitive playing field.

Rapport is all about being human.  It's a skill that needs to be developed and handled with care.  Learning to establish rapport is one of the many fundamental tasks to becoming successful in any human interaction.  Learn it....develop it....make it second nature, and you'll win every time.
