Andy Mooers wrote a post this morning about agents and age titled "You don't see alot of 75 year old fast ball American and national league pitchers do you?" It inspired me to share my thoughts and describe exactly how I prepared for the future. How you are preparing for your future years will be the answer to the question of "how old is too old to wear the R."
When one reaches a certain age, the idea of doing evening appointments that run into the night are not appealing. The idea of working around everyone else's time frame is not appealing. At a certain point in your real estate career, you'll determine that the time has arrived for you to call the shots. You have paid your dues. You've been there and done all of that to the nth degree, and now you want to do only what you enjoy doing.
In preparation for the future, a team is the answer. Create a team of listing agents and make the phone ring for them. It's a great way to stay in the game, receive an income and not have to do any real estate work that you do not wish to do. I've prepared for this to happen, and I can easily live on referral fees. I make the phone ring and my team is made up of two seasoned agents that work seven days a week, and our business is listings. We have a separate team of agents who man the open house events every weekend and they are each paid a flat fee for the four hours ($200.) The open house team is a great way to cover the many subdivisions. We rarely work buyers. We usually refer buyers to others in our office. We are listing agents, until I can find the right buyer agent for the team. I'm very particular about the level of competency. I'd rather not hire anyone than hire the wrong one!!!
The bottom line is that there is no age limit, if you prepare for the future, you can participate until your eyes close. I will continue to do what I'm doing until I decide I don't want to do this anymore, and there's no reason for that to happen. I can market from anywhere, as long as I have a laptop. Blogging and direct mail marketing are my two major methods. I planned this ten years ago, when I was in my mid-fifties. Do you have a plan in place?
