Cream Rises To The Top....But Other Matter Floats Also!!!

Lenn Harley's post today led me to reminisce about my early days in the real estate business.  It made me think about some of the other agents with whom I first began my career.  After receiving my real estate license, my first job was with a Century 21 office.   Recruiting was the name of the game and if one had a license and a pulse, they were welcome to join the sales force.

There was not an interview, but just casual conversation about the schedule and covering the telephones.  Attendance was required at the Century 21, "2+1," week of sales training.  After that one week of sales training, you were thrown on floor time and the rest was up to you!!  Sink or swim.

When I think back now, I can remember quality calls coming into that office.  Agents, who should not have been answering the phones, were doing just that, answering the phones.  There was no mentoring.  There was no direction.  Times were quite different then, but I'm certainly glad that I was a recruit during that era.  I was so frightened that I was not going to survive, that I made damn sure I did survive.

The agents who were not making money would jump from office to office, continually blaming their failure in the industry on their previous office!!  Unfortunately, this continues to occur today.  Our only saving grace is that the declining market has eliminated a great percentage of those who should never have attempted to participate in real estate sales.  They did not belong in the business.  The problem is that it's not only cream that rises to the top.   There is a lot of "matter" that is lighter than water and will also continue to float!!
