All teams are not created equally. There are a variety of reasons for forming a team, and those reasons usually form the mold for that team's structure. My team was formed because I wanted to begin the process of weaning myself from the real estate business. It was my decision to do that, but I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. Thus, I formed a team. My cake is not a multi-tiered creation, but I'm happy to take the "cupcake" I receive every month rather than the big chunk. In return, I do what I enjoy without any stress or aggravation. I market and promote the team members and my team name. My marketing continues to make the phone ring.
There are many reasons to create a team. The duration of existence of the team will be dependent on the strength of the original need to form that team. There are many teams that are created for the wrong reason. It's not a social gathering. The purpose must be clear, and the players must be productive participants.
Teams that I've seen fail have done so because the original creation was not for a sound reason. A team, if created properly and designed to be productive with everyone having a specific function, has the ability to survive in any market. The most difficult test of team survival is during that period when the market is waning. The faster the market tanks, the steadier and more diligent the team members need to prospect for new business. The ability to thrive in a down market is the test of time for real estate agents and the teams they represent.
